Drumming & Drum-Making Programs for Schools & Youth Service Providers
Drum Up Big has over 10 years of experience delivering Drumming and Drum-Making Programs in schools, youth centres and on remote Indigenous communities. We provide drums, shakers and other percussion instruments so that everyone can join in.
From one-off visits to long-term programs.
Drumming is a fun effective and activity for young people to connect with each other in a positive group environment, express themselves creatively and increase their cultural awareness. Drumming with others develops self-awareness, listening skills, coordination, team work and patience. The drum circle can be used as a metaphor to help students understand life concepts such as keeping in rhythm with ones self and others, working together in harmony, teamwork etc.
Drumming can work wonders with young people who have trouble connecting with others. Playing music with others builds confidence in oneself and trust in others because African rhythmic structure facilitates individual musical expression within a sustained group cohesion and effort. Repetitive rhythm has a physiologically calming effect. It also supports and creates neural pathways that are used for processing and communicating information. Intense emotions and impulses, that could otherwise become disruptive or destructive, can be channeled into creative and positive activity.
Drumming Has A Positive Effect On:
- Ability to focus
- Self-control, ability to stay ‘on task’
- Development of self-awareness and self-esteem
- Listening skills
- Frustration Tolerance
